Thunder Bay RiverAlpena is located on the sunrise side of Northeast Michigan and sits on Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay. The City of Alpena was incorporated in 1871 and has been a host to many industries – from logging and cement production to cement block manufacturing and tourism. Many of the industries exist today. One industry that is increasing in Alpena is tourism. Because of the dangerous conditions ships faced in Thunder Bay, the Bay is home to more than 200 shipwrecks that are now Federally protected as part of the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Underwater Preserve. Thousands of visitors make the easy trip to Alpena each year to explore the shipwrecks both in the water and on dry land.

45th ParallelAlpena is more than shipwrecks. It is surrounded by walking/hiking trails, bike paths and snowmobile trails. It really is an outdoor person’s dream! From the many inland lakes, Thunder Bay River and public beaches on Lake Huron, to the vast forests and impressive trail system, there is something for every outdoor enthusiast!

Home to nearly 10,000 people, the City of Alpena is the largest city in Northeast Michigan, and is considered to be one of the two anchor cities of Northern Michigan. Within the City (easy walking!) of Alpena, visitors will find impressive architecture as they wander downtown and through the residential areas.
